The Delmarva Peninsula has seen immense growth in business in 2022. However, there have also been permanent closures of renowned restaurants and historic businesses.
Before we kick off the new year, take a look at this year's most notable closures along the East Coast.

Dolles' Land of Sweets

Dolles' Land of Sweetsclosed its 67th Street location after nearly 10 years in business in Ocean City. The motley candy store attributed its impending closure to a lack of staff, saying the shop has had trouble finding and retaining staff over the years and is closed more days than it is open this year.
The 67th Street store closed in September.
Since its inception in 1910, the sweet shop has captured the hearts (and stomachs) of resort residents and tourists alike. A variety of candy, popcorn, fudge, and salted caramel are made daily at Dolle's at the corner of Wicomico Street and Boardwalk.
“We thank you for your patronage of our 67th Street location and look forward to seeing you at any of our four other locations. Thanks also to our neighbors at 67th Street MidTown Center! It was wonderful," Dolle's Candyland said in a Sept. 1 Facebook post.

Dolle's operates locations in and around Ocean City on Wicomico Street Pedestrian Street, West Ocean City across from the Outlets, 120th Street in Ocean City, and Main Street in Berlin.

The Frog Bar closed in Ocean City after its lease was not renewed.
"It is with a heavy heart that we announce that Frog Bar will not reopen. We want to thank our loyal customers who have become friends and even family," the resort town regular wrote in a social media post. Here with all of you. We hope you will stay with us when we change locations. This is not goodbye, this frog is just hopping to his next Lilly platform."
Tequila Spottdrossel

Mockingbird Tequila in West Ocean City closed permanently on Monday, December 5. The Mexican bar and grill shared the news of its closure online, urging patrons to stop by and say goodbye to the weekend.
The news comes after staff shortages were reported at the Mexican bar and West Ocean City location. The restaurant will remain open at its second location in Ocean City at 12919 Coastal Hwy in the Montego Bay Mall.

Bull on the Beach's original boardwalk location near Second Street closed permanently this fall.
The restaurant's lease expired at the end of the season, the popular restaurant and bar announced on Facebook. Bull on the Beach recently celebrated its 42nd anniversary along the resort's historic boardwalk, but that location's closure was imminent. The 94th Street location remains open.
Fear not: Bull on the Beach remains interested in expanding its brand along the East Coast. The open-air restaurant sought a different location on and off the boardwalk. On December 16, he announced on Facebook that he would be back at South Division Street and Boardwalk near Trimper's.

Angelos Pizza and sandwiches

Angelo's Pizza and Subs closed permanently on August 28. The takeout and delivery restaurant announced its closure on Facebook five days earlier. Owned and operated by the Chaudhry family, the pizzeria is popular with many.
Faran Chaudhry, his father Zafar, and other restaurant employees agreed that the customers were the reason they worked so hard.delmarva nowpreviously reported.

Elmers Tastee Freez

On February 6, Nancy Driscoll of Elmer's Tastee Freez announced that the company was closing after 32 years.
“I have nothing but love and respect for all my customers and employees. We all learned a lot from each other by working with my coworkers,” Driscoll wrote online.
In the spring, Fried and Frozen opened at the location, but later closed.
Spicy and Smoked Barbecue

On January 25, Salisbury's Stoked & Smoked BBQ announced it was closing its doors at the store "due to unforeseen circumstances" but has other plans for the business.
“We will continue to offer catering and private events, as well as sell our sauces and seasonings at local markets and on our Facebook page. ' the restaurant wrote online.
SubSide Deli

SubSide Deli, a favorite for 26 years, closed its doors just before the holiday on December 23, 2021. Owner Allen Davis said it was time to retire.
“I opened Subside Deli 26 years ago with my wife Connie. Over the years, I have had the great pleasure of working with my wife, children and grandchildren, as well as many other great associates," Davis said. "As I approach my 80th birthday, I have decided that it is time for me to retire."
Davis thanks all of his customers who have supported his business over the past 26 years.

Renaissance

Venue for live performances in Salisbury,Renaissance, permanently closed on October 17. For 18 months, he ran his live venue despite the uncertainties of the post-pandemic world, nationwide labor shortages and rising operating costs due to inflation, Revival said.
Revival thanks the cast, guests, and crew for guiding the downtown venue through this difficult time.

After more than 30 years, the popular Raw Smitty McGees restaurant and bar on West Fenwick Island closed its doors for good on February 12.
The company was shut down due to staffing issues and supply chain challenges. The restaurant announced its closure on Facebook.
"Thank you for being a special part of the Smitty McGee family! We will miss you so much!" the Facebook post read. The popular restaurant had been open since 1989.

ark cafe and bistro

Ark Coffee House and Bistro announced in a social media post on April 19 that it would be closing its doors for good.
“We would like to thank everyone for all their patronage over the years, but unfortunately Ark Coffee House had to close. Thank you for supporting the locals," the post read.
The bistro was known for its homemade breakfast and lunch dishes, as well as its favorite coffees.
Rehoboth-Strand
Nicholas Pizza

Nicholas Pizzaofficially closed its doors in Rehoboth Beach on September 5, National Cheese Pizza Day. Delaware Pizzeria opened its doors in 1971 and recently celebrated its 51st anniversary on Main Street in Rehoboth Beach.
Nicola Pizza previously operated two locations in Rehoboth, including 8 N. First St. and 71 Rehoboth Ave., with both locations permanently closed.
"We were able to combine the best of both downtown locations into one building at 17323 Ocean One Plaza, Lewes, where we hope to see them in mid-October," Nicola Pizza said in a Facebook post on September 9. .
The pizzeria has since opened shop in its new Lewes location.
Center-Blues, from the group behind Bethany Blues in Lewes and Bethany Beach and The Starboard in Dewey Beach, is expected to open in spring 2023 at the former Nicola's First Street address.

Duck Donuts in Rehoboth Beach closed its doors for good in January after first closing for the winter season.
“We have made the difficult decision to close permanently,” the donut shop said in a Facebook post. “We would like to thank the community for their support and loyalty. We apologize for any inconvenience."
The store opened in December 2020. It was the only Duck Donuts on the Delmarva Peninsula. Duck Donuts originated in the Outer Banks of North Carolina and has more than 80 locations across the country.

OCN BLUBeach Bar & Grille has closed its doors for good. The restaurant's owners cited their retirement plans as the reason it closed in January.
The ConchIsland Key West Bar & Grill has moved to the OCN BLU property. Conch Island offers food, drink and live music,according to their website.
Lewes

Tartaruga Verde in the towns of Cinco Pontas closed definitively on September 30. The Sports Bar and Grill, which opened in January 2008, announced its upcoming closure online.
"Join us in saying goodbye to the Green Turtle in Lewes. We had a great time being a part of the Village of Five Points community and hope this is not goodbye, but seeing you again!" in a Facebook post on September 21st. .
Die Greene Turtle Sports Bar and Grilloperates 34 locations. The original Greene Turtle opened in Ocean City in 1976.

2 Dips Ice Cream, the popular Lewes ice cream parlor, closed in May after 12 years in business.
"It breaks my heart to write this post after 12 years of serving ice cream to such a wonderful community. As many of you have already seen, our building on Savannah Rd. is for sale and is now leased with many plans for the future of the property,” the Wagner family wrote.
“After the death of our Big Dipper the family had to make some difficult decisions which unfortunately resulted in the closure of 2 Dips. As much as we love the family business, seeing all the smiling faces of him and becoming family with you, our regular customers, it just isn't the same without him," the family said.

99 sea levelclosed in Bethany Beach. The upscale Raw restaurant and bar, formerly located at 99 Hollywood St. or the Bethany Beach Ocean Suites hotel, announced its closure in a Facebook post on November 1.
“We would like to thank the Bethany Beach community and our many visitors from out of town for their incredible support over the years,” said 99 Sea Level.
The Bethany Beach Ocean Suites Hotel now has new owners. According to 99 Sea Level, the owners want to bring their own restaurant concept to the hotel, hence the closure of the Raw restaurant and bar.
Hopefully, the entire team at 99 Sea Level will continue to work with the restaurant as they look to open their new seafood and shrimp restaurant, Starboard Claw, in 2023.

After six successful seasons, the popular Dewey Beach restaurant Mezcali announced its closure online in March.
"This restaurant has enriched my life in so many ways, both professionally and personally, and ironically, it was the mezcali that set me on my next adventure," owner Mary Oliver wrote in a social media post. "It's rare in this business that you have the opportunity to make the decision to go out of business on your own terms and I'm so thankful I made that decision myself."
Oliver added that she is grateful to everyone who has supported the restaurant over the years, whether through their business or their expertise.
