How to publish a planner to Amazon: Print notebooks on demand with the Kindle Direct Publishing Tutorial
If you want to learn how I createdthis blog plannerand internationally listed on Amazon, stay tuned and you will find out.
For the last few years I've been teaching bloggers and small business ownershow to create ebookand other digital products to sell on your blogs to increase your online income.
In this article, I'll show you exactly how to come up with a lightweight paperback idea for your niche, create it, design it, and publish it to Amazon's print-on-demand (KDP) service:
Why should you choose to publish with Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing?
when I started drawingMy blog planner 2023, I knew I wanted to sell it in physical form rather than offering it as a printed or digital product.
It was important to me that people could write by hand and write things down. Because when it comes to tracking, writing, and checking off your goals, I think it works a lot better if you have a fitness planner.
and why hadpublished an e-book on AmazonI knew beforehand that stand alone brochures could also be published at very good profit with no upfront costs.
They areKDP programenables anyone to publish eBooks, books, notebooks and magazines that are printed on demand. No need to order tons of stock copies or box them up yourself, they do all the work!
Quick note: This post contains affiliate links, and they give me a small commission (at no additional cost to you) if you buy something through them.
Other benefits of KDP's print-on-demand service include:
- Start for free.
- You win60% royaltieson all sales.
- Very low printing costs- Depending on the size of your planner, you can pay as little as $2-$4 for printing.
- It appears in a market that has millions of users, buyers and visitors every day.
- You can scale your sales with Amazon Sponsored Ads and reach a whole new audience.
- Orders are filled out and shipped automatically.
How much does it cost to make a planner?
You can create your own planner pages online for very little money or even for free.
It cost me $30-$50 to design and publish this planner and I will walk you through the exact steps you can follow to publish a paperback in your niche or in conjunction with your blog.
Here are the tools I used to create and publish this planner:
- A Canva Pro subscription– I used Canva to create my planner, uploaded custom templates and fonts, and saved my final work as a PDF. You can also use Canva's free account with some limitations. However, for commercial licenses of fonts and designs used, you need a PRO account. This is also where I create my cover photo.
- Design pack templates for planners– Instead of creating my pages from scratch, I used, combined and modified some existing Canva templates I found here (and bought the commercial license, which allowed me to print and sell the final product). Check out other models made for youHere.
- Pacotes Hobbyist– I bought some custom fonts and uploaded them to Canva.
- An Amazon KDP account- FREE to create. I already had one. I just paid about $10 for two author's copies to be mailed to my address for approval of the final planner design.
Low content books are easier and quicker to create compared to eBooks because you don't need to research the content, just strategize. Planners require more design work (and I'll show you how I made it easy), but you can also post custom notebooks wherever you need themLined journal page templates.
But enough about my planner. Let me show you step by step how to make your own daily planner.
5 steps to create KDP schedulers
1. Choose a topic and niche for your planner
If you want to think of something that your audience will buy, the first step is to choose a purpose for your planners. What will people use it for? And who exactly are these people?
Research your niche. Ask your audience questions or pay attention to their needs and wants when it comes to planners or journals or even daily or weekly activities they participate in.
Basically, with low-content books, you create the framework for people to enter their own thoughts, ideas, and notes. Therefore, your pages and content must serve this purpose.
The first step is to decide what type of planner to create. Here are some options:
- daily routine
- weekly planner
- quarterly planner
- year planner
- To-Do-Listen-Organizer
- personal planner
- self care planner
- business planner
- Project plans
- Budget plans
- financial advisor
- Bullet-Journal
- productivity planner
- wedding planner
These are just a few examples that you can combine or specify: for example, an annual planner for new moms or a household planner for future homeowners. Pick a purpose while enlightening your audience.
2. Plan your planner sections
Once you figure that out, plan out the sections and pages of the planner in your head. Remember to make sure the content serves its intended purpose.
If you want your planner to make it easier to manage tasks, add to-do lists, monthly charts, responsibility pages, etc.

I modeled my planner using key stats and spreadsheets that my blog clients and I have already used, so I knew the prompts, pages, and goal setting exercises would be useful to my audience.
Also, the beauty of creating a daily, weekly, or yearly planner is that once you've created a specific section, you can replicate it for the remaining days, months, or years that you want to include.
A good tip for creating something that really helps and stands out to your audience is to look at the Amazon reviews of other planners in your niche or similar niches. See what's missing and what you can improve. Then add it to your planner!
3. Create your Amazon KDP scheduler in Canva
To bring your planner idea to life, you need to design and create your manuscript. That's how it goes:
STEP 1: CREATE A CANVA ACCOUNT
The best tool for creating, designing, and exporting your PDF is Canva.
You can start with a free account, but I strongly recommend itUpgrade to a Canva PRO account. This gives you access to important resources that will make this step easier and faster.

With the PRO account, you can also import your own fonts and templates.
USE:You cannot use Canva's free planner templates with KDP if you plan to resell your planner. As tempting as it may be, you can only use them for personal use. Otherwise you need special commercial licenses for the included items, so it is best to import your own fonts and build your planner individually.
But before you do anything else, make sureCreate a Canva account here.
STEP 2: CHOOSE THE SIZE OF YOUR RUSTIC KDP PLANNER
Next you need to determine the size of your planner. This determines the size of your pages and overall layout, as well as the actual size of the brochure Amazon will print for you.
This must be selectedList of KDP print options.
This can be based on personal preference and depends on how thick or large you need the planner. But when creating KDP planners for Amazon, you now need to determine the exact dimensions of the pages and use those exact numbers in Canva to ensure a perfect print.
Some popular planner sizes for KDP brochures are:
- 8,5" x 11" (21,59 x 27,94 cm)
- 6″ x 9″ (15,24 x 22,86 cm)
- 5″ x 8″ (12,7 x 20,32 cm)
- 5,06" x 7,81" (12,85 x 19,84 cm)
- 21 x 29,7 cm (8,27″ x 11,69″)

After choosing a size, create a new project in Canva with those dimensions or resize the file you're working on to match them.
STEP 3: DESIGN YOUR PLANNER PAGES ON CANVA
Now that you've looked at the blank canvas in Canva, it's time to start creating! This is where you create your own planner pages. Start with your cover, content pages, dedication and introduction. Then proceed to create and style the sections planned in the previous step.
You can create everything from scratch (remember: you can't use existing Canva templates in your library) or buy and import KDP planner templates as long as you have the commercial license to do so. That's what I did!

I went totheme packsand I found some Canva KDP planner templates that I liked in style and bought them with the commercial licenses, meaning sellers would let me use their work and modify it to sell on Amazon.
Here are some designs you might like for less than $10:
- 202 page bullet journal templates
- Monthly planner template
- Social media planner
- Over 99 pages for a bullet journal
I used a combination of several purchased templates and a few pages made from scratch to create my perfect planner.
I also went in, adding my own fonts and elements, and modifying existing pages to display the sections I had in mind so that the end result isn't too similar to other creators who may have used those pages.
You only need to create repeating pages (like daily, weekly, monthly pages, to-do lists, etc.) once, then duplicate and move them wherever you need them.
But using templates to get started saved me a lot of time since I'm not a certified designer.
STEP 4: EXPORT YOUR PLANNER AS A PDF
When you're happy with how it looks, you can save your Canva design as a print-ready PDF.
Keep in mind that when creating layouts in Canva, you can have a maximum of 100 pages per layout. That doesn't mean your journal should only be 100 pages long. But if you want it longer, you should create two parts and then combine them as a PDF. was formerly this PDF merger.
4. Create your KDP account and Amazon Pocketbook
Once you have your final manuscript in PDF format, it's timeCreate your KDP accountand upload there. Creating an author account is really free and very easy.

Last but not least, you want to preview your file and make sure everything looks good and fits between the printable crop line. Amazon has an online preview that you really need to check out before you post it.

This allows you to preview each page and approve the final manuscript. I also like to order copies from the author and check everything in a test planner before publishing.
